Your health and wellness are essential as they form the basis of your work life, your home life and all your personal interactions. Therefore, it is absolutely imperative you make them both a priority and come up with a plan to implement them into your life. It is the only way to ensure long-term sustainable results and prevent you from falling back into bad habits. It is easy to avoid the trips to the doctor or to skip a day or three at the gym, but if you want to look and feel your best every day, then it is vital you create and stick to a health and wellness program that has your best interests at heart.
What is a health and wellness program?
Everyone needs some kind of health and wellness program to use as a guideline; otherwise, it is impossible to determine your successes (and even your failures) as you progress. It will help keep you in check and enable you to tailor a plan which is best balanced to your lifestyle. When you are healthier, you are more productive at home and work and in turn, happier and engaged with everything and everyone around you.
A health and wellness program will cover your physical, mental, emotional, spiritual, and occupational health, among other things, and leave you feeling satisfied and appreciative of all that life has to offer.
Personalise your health and wellness program
If you hate going to the gym and avoid it like the plague, then chances are a program involving frequent gym visits is not for you. The same goes if you detest exercises such as yoga or even jogging. Pick an exercise or sport you enjoy doing, as it means you will be able to stick it out longer, especially when the going gets tough. Not everyone’s health and wellness program is going to be identical so plan yours with YOU in mind.
Consider your goals
Your goals will help you fine tune your personalised program. If you want to lose weight, then your program will again be different for someone whose intention it is to build up their muscle mass. If you want to reconnect on a more spiritual level, then perhaps you will add meditation to the list.
Consider what your goals are.
- Do you want to reduce your headaches?
- Get fit?
- Lower your cholesterol level?
- Reduce your coffee intake?
- Cut down on sugar?
- Have more energy?
Whatever it is – apply the SMART goal system (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic and Timely) to help you get there.
Aim for consistent improvement
Rome was not built in a day and neither can you achieve your health and wellness goals in a week or even a month. Start slowly and aim for consistent improvement over time. It is not an all or nothing program. If you go to the gym five days a week, you are bound to experience burnout and frustration; and, you will find that your long-term chances of staying on track are significantly reduced. Go to the gym once or twice a week and mix it up with other programs and interests so it is varied and, most importantly, doable. You have to give yourself at least a couple of months to get your mind and body used to the new routine and ultimately the new YOU!
Now once you understand the benefits and see it working for yourself on a personal level, then you might wish to consider implementing a program to help your team or fellow employees.
